TO LULL AND BY[E]
SANNE KABALT
Kunsthuis SYB is pleased to invite you to Sanne Kabalt’s final presentation on Saturday, December 17 at 16:00.
During the past few weeks Sanne Kabalt has been working in Kunsthuis SYB on a new project about lullabies/widzesankjes/wiegenliedjes. What caught her artistic curiosity is the fact that the songs used to lull children to sleep often seem to serve another purpose as well: to express the worries of the singer (usually the mother). The ‘recipient’ of the song does not yet speak a language and is soothed by a familiar voice, rocking rhythm and melancholy melody. Meanwhile, the ‘giver’ of the song can give voice to their own doubts and troubles in the lyrics.
Sanne collected lullabies from Friesland, with the help of the Tresoar archive. As she was working on the archival material her research expanded around conversations with friends and now covers lullabies from different geographies. She is making a new work based in this research. The work currently consists of an installation in which the (singing) voice, new combinations of original lullaby lyrics, and shadow imagery of mother and daughter come together. During her final presentation, she will share with the public a first, experimental version of this new work in SYB.
