Halla Einarsdóttir

Residency

Portal Scroll (still), Halla Einarsdóttir, 2020

On view: Saturdays & Sundays, 1 – 5pm
Final presentation: Saturday 25 July, 3pm

This month, SYB is pleased to host Icelandic artist Halla Einarsdóttir. In her work, Halla is interested in environments and the way they influence perspectives, behaviours and interactions. In this project, she also focuses on surfaces, as they can tell us something about the nature of an object. Its texture shows us how the outside of this object, or a building, or a body has responded to external conditions, but it also obscures what’s inside it. Considering the narrative potential of these surfaces, what can be discovered in the inevitable cracks in them?

During her stay at SYB, Halla will be departing from these themes. She will continue working on her video Portal Scroll (developed with artist Faysal Mroueh). The video integrates a first person perspective as used in video game environments with multiple audio tracks, inviting you to follow a player’s exploration of the virtual space with her, while focusing on the game’s textures and surfaces and their unfolding effects on the narration. Halla also plans to create new sculptures, extending her video into a physical counterpart.

Halla Einarsdóttir (b.1991 Reykjavík, Iceland) is an artist based in Rotterdam. She obtained her BA from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam 2015. In 2016, her work was shortlisted for the 7th Sybren Hellinga Art Prize at Kunsthuis SYB. She is currently enrolled in the MFA program at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam.

Halla’s project in progress will be on view every weekend, from 1 till 5pm, and will be presented on Saturday the 25th of July, from 3pm in SYB.
