Kunsthuis SYB celebrates a ten-year anniversary! With the group exhibition ’10 years of SYB’, a publication, a Masterclass in art criticism, performances, musical reflections and socratic dialogues, SYB temporarily swaps the remote village of Beetsterzwaag for cosmopolitan Amsterdam, introducing itself to a wider audience.
For the benefit of the exhibition, SYB asked a number of former residents to create a “remake” or “re-enactment” of the work or project they realized in SYB. Thus, ’10 years of SYB’ is searching for a translation of the experiences that the artist acquired during the residency period, and which greatly enhanced his or her artistic development.
In addition, P/////AKT will be a temporary stage for performances, musical interventions, a Masterclass in Art Criticism and a series of socratic dialogues; a programme in which the inter- and multidisciplinarity of Kunsthuis SYB echoes. The exhibition features a catalogue featuring, among others, a number of literary reflections on the socratic dialogues.
Moreover, SYB presents an eponymous publication following the symposium ‘Our House in the Middle of the Street’. It features reflections of writers such as Maria Lind and Frans Willem Korsten on various recurring themes in SYB’s projects, in which her special location in Beetsterzwaag is central.
We would like you to join in the festivities! The team at SYB bids you a fond welcome in P/////AKT Amsterdam.
10 JAAR SYB
Group exhibition by ex-residents at kunsthuis SYB
Kunsthuis SYB celebrates a ten-year anniversary! With the group exhibition ’10 years of SYB’, a publication, a Masterclass in art criticism, performances, musical reflections and socratic dialogues, SYB temporarily swaps the remote village of Beetsterzwaag for cosmopolitan Amsterdam, introducing itself to a wider audience.
For the benefit of the exhibition, Lotje van Lieshout and Rutger Emmelkamp, who are members of the programming committee of SYB, asked a number of former residents to create a “remake” or “re-enactment” of the work or project they realized in SYB. Thus, ’10 years of SYB’ is searching for a translation of the experiences that the artist acquired during the residency period and which greatly enhanced his or her artistic development.
The inter- and multidisciplinarity of kunsthuis SYB are being addressed in the extensive programme of activities that the exhibition features. Thus, throughout the years, visual artists have been collaborating with musicians, writers, poets and dancers exploring unknown territories in their work. During SYB’s decennial jubilee, a number of performances and musical interventions will take place. In addition, for many years SYB has offered a platform for young and promising art reviewers whose reviews are published in the newsletter and on the website. The Masterclass in Art Criticism given by author and essayist Lucette ter Borg is organized for them.
On three afternoons, so-called Socratic dialogues led by Rutger Emmelkamp are organized in which three different groups, such as pupils from secondary education schools, research journalists, philosophers and anthropologists view the exhibition after which they will philosophically approach the displayed work. Three writers and/or poets who were previously involved with SYB will attend and convert the conversations into a literary work. This essay, poem or story is allocated a spot in the catalogue, which will be compiled during and on the occasion of the exhibition.
Moreover, SYB presents an eponymous publication following the symposium ‘Our House in the Middle of the Street’. It features reflections of writers such as Maria Lind and Frans Willem Korsten on various recurring themes in SYB’s projects, in which the special location in Beetsterzwaag is central.
We would like you to join in the festivities! The team at SYB bids you a fond welcome in P/////AKT Amsterdam.
