DESIGNATED GROUND
Residency Hee-Seung Choi, Edd Schouten
As a seesaw, roundabout, slide and swing choreograph children’s movements, parents sit still on surrounding benches. This is how the South Korean composer and visual artist, Hee-Seung Choi (Seoul, 1976) remembers the defined space of the playground. At a young age Choi emigrated to the United States and learnt, early on in life, how to constantly adapt to new surroundings. She is interested in the ways public space can shape this course of socialisation and identification.
Interaction and play arise in the playground in a free and flowing manner while children simultaneously learn what kind of behavior is accepted and safe. For the coming weeks Choi will approach SYB in the same way; as her designated space. Her own playground memories, Frisian folklore and the spatial and psychological parameters of SYB will both provide sources and limitations.
Choi will hold conversations with a psychoanalytical theoretician and research notions in Frisian history and folklore. She will enter into collaboration with the choreograph Edd Schouten and a dancer of movement improvisation. In the last two weeks of her residency she will concentrate on the preparation of a performance together with these guests.
Hee-Seung Choi (Seoul, South Korea, 1976) has lived in The Netherlands since 2004. She previously played, taught and wrote classical music in Baltimore where she obtained her masters in composing from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. In 2008 she graduated from the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague from the ArtScience department. Currently her choices of mediums vary from performance and installation to video and sound. Choi has given performances in the KingKong Gallery in The Hague and in PAKT Amsterdam. Her new music could be heard from Ohio to Brno and in Korzo Theater in The Hague.
